At Hope Solutions, we are proud to partner with dedicated community members who share our mission of healing the effects of poverty and homelessness. Recently, a remarkable Eagle Scout project brought new life to the Play Therapy Room at Garden Park Apartments (GPA), a space that provides vital mental health services to children who have experienced the trauma associated with homelessness and poverty.
A Vision for Renewal
Made possible by a generous donation from Carolyn and Michael Bealmear in 2021, the Play Therapy Room serves as a comforting spot for children living at Garden Park Apartments. With 27 families and approximately 40 children calling the complex home, this room plays a critical role in their healing journey.
However, the space was in need of a refresh to better serve its purpose. Lane Kish, a scout with Troop 224, partnered with the GPA team to create a vision for what the room could be. She then created a project plan that included painting the walls a welcoming color, reorganizing the layout, replacing furniture, and decluttering toys and supplies.
Lane worked closely with the Garden Park team to ensure every decision met the needs of the children and staff. Every detail was thoughtfully designed to create a functional and calming environment
I was so happy to get to do my Eagle Scout Project with Hope Solutions. This project meant a lot to me to be able to help kids have a peaceful place to feel better.
Lane, (Soon to Be) Eagle Scout
A Team Effort
This project was more than just a renovation—it was a community effort. Over two weekends, volunteers from Troop 224 helped clean and declutter, reorganize supplies, build and install new furniture and repaint the room. Items no longer needed were responsibly recycled or donated through local groups like Buy Nothing. The transformation not only improved the use of space but also created an inviting atmosphere for therapy sessions.
A Lasting Impact
The results were met with overwhelming gratitude from staff and residents alike. This project exemplifies how thoughtful design and hard work can transform a space into a sanctuary for healing.
I can’t even begin to tell you how excited and thrilled people were to see the new playroom. Looking at the before and after pictures is just so moving. It is so lovely now. Both the kids and the staff are enjoying it.
