Yesterday, nearly 150 community members gathered in the parking lot of Grace Presbyterian Church to celebrate a momentous occasion: the grand opening of Hope Village, an innovative affordable housing community in Walnut Creek. This collaborative project, the first of its kind on faith-owned land in Contra Costa County, represents a beacon of hope and a bold step forward in addressing our region’s housing crisis.
Transforming Vision Into Reality
Hope Village is the result of an inspiring partnership between Grace Presbyterian Church, Hope Solutions, Firm Foundation Community Housing, HomeAid Northern California, Pulte Group, and the City of Walnut Creek. Together, these organizations have created a vibrant community of six high-quality cottage homes, providing individuals experiencing homelessness with a dignified and secure place to call home. Each thoughtfully designed cottage includes a kitchenette, bathroom and shower, bed, and dining area, ensuring residents have the comforts they need to rebuild their lives.
Strategically located on underutilized church property, Hope Village maximizes existing resources while fostering a supportive and welcoming environment. Shared amenities, including an outdoor patio, a fully-equipped laundry facility, and an on-site office for social services coordinated by Hope Solutions, encourage a sense of community among residents.
A Day of Celebration
The grand opening event featured heartfelt remarks from key leaders who played instrumental roles in bringing this vision to life. Speakers included: Pastor Mark Burnham of Grace Presbyterian Church, Cindy Darling, Mayor of Walnut Creek, Jasmine Tarkoff, Consultant for Strategic Initiatives at Hope Solutions, Deanne Pearn, CEO of Hope Solutions, Taryn Sandulyak, Executive Director of Firm Foundation Community Housing, Crisand Giles, Executive Director of HomeAid Northern California, Jeff Scofield, Vice President of Procurement at Pulte Group
Following their inspiring remarks, an official ribbon-cutting ceremony marked the opening of this innovative community. Attendees were then invited to tour the homes and see firsthand the thoughtful design and supportive environment that Hope Village offers.
A Shared Commitment to Hope and Dignity
“What sets Hope Village apart is the sense of community it will foster,” said Pastor Mark Burnham. “Residents will not only have access to secure housing but also to a supportive network of services.” This sentiment was echoed by Jasmine Tarkoff, who emphasized that Hope Village is about more than housing. “It’s about offering hope, dignity, and a path toward a better future.”
The project’s success is a testament to the power of collaboration. Partners like Janis Style Staging generously donated their expertise to stage a home for the event, ensuring that the privacy of future residents was respected.
Media Coverage and Community Impact
The significance of this milestone was highlighted by media outlets, including CBS Bay Area, KCBS, and Affordable Housing Finance Magazine who shared the story of Hope Village with the wider community. This coverage helps amplify the importance of creating innovative solutions to address homelessness and inspires others to join the effort.
Looking Ahead
Hope Village is a shining example of what’s possible when communities come together with a shared commitment to compassion and innovation. As residents move into their new homes and begin their journeys toward stability and independence, we are reminded of the profound impact that a safe and supportive environment can have on individuals and families.
