Marjory Ellison, a Senior Case Manager with Hope Solutions, recently shared an inspiring story of a Hope Solutions client, Sandra, whose journey exemplifies the power of perseverance, community support, and compassionate care.
Sandra, a 65-year-old woman, was referred to Hope Solutions while staying at the Concord shelter. She had experienced homelessness for an extended period after being released from prison, where she had spent 25 years following a felony conviction. Upon release, Sandra initially lived with her daughter in Pittsburg but was forced to leave when the landlord discovered her criminal history. Accompanied by an oxygen tank and a walker, Sandra faced not only physical health challenges but also significant social barriers, including a long history of addiction.
Despite these obstacles, Sandra was determined to rebuild her life. Marjory quickly recognized the complexity of Sandra’s situation and began working tirelessly to secure stable housing. Due to Sandra’s criminal record and substance use history, finding a landlord willing to rent to her was a major challenge. After persistent outreach to her network, Ellison located a shared bedroom with a compassionate landlord who believed in offering second chances. While not ideal, this housing arrangement represented a crucial milestone, moving Sandra out of the shelter and into a more stable environment.
However, stability proved fragile. Sandra’s roommate began using drugs, which triggered a relapse for Sandra. Given Sandra’s fragile health—she was undergoing dialysis three times a week—Marjory grew increasingly concerned. She made frequent visits to the home, engaging in honest and direct conversations with both women about the dangers of drug use and the importance of recovery. During one such conversation, Ellison candidly told Sandra, “You’re too old to be using drugs.” Sandra responded with a hopeful laugh, promising, “I’m going to do better.”
True to her word, two weeks later Sandra reached out to Ellison to share that she was entering rehabilitation. She checked into Walum House in Pittsburg, where she completed the program successfully in September. This marked a pivotal turning point in Sandra’s life. Her graduation was celebrated by many, including her landlord and Marjory, symbolizing the power of community support and personal determination.
Since completing rehab, Sandra has remained committed to sobriety. She maintains close contact with her sponsors and regularly checks in with Marjory, who continues to provide encouragement and support. Today, Sandra lives in a beautiful senior living community in Clayton, where she enjoys a safe and supportive environment conducive to her ongoing recovery and well-being.
Sandra’s story is a testament to the mission of Hope Solutions and our Rapid Rehousing programs: transforming lives through stability, support, and compassion. Resilience, combined with a strong network of care, can overcome even the most daunting challenges. Sandra’s journey from homelessness and addiction to recovery and housing stability serves as a powerful reminder that second chances are possible at any age and that with the right support, lasting change can be achieved.
