Volunteer Spotlight: Nancy Luna-Walker

A Decade of Giving Back

Nancy Luna-Walker has volunteered at Hope Solutions’ Lakeside Apartments for almost a decade. She began volunteering as a tutor in our after-school program, helping children aged K-12 to excel in school. Over the years, she has also offered support in helping students complete college and scholarship applications because she knows the importance of higher education and how challenging it can be to be a first-generation college student.

“After 27 years as a corporate executive with ATT, I wanted my next chapter to be hands-on giving back. I chose to volunteer with Hope Solutions because I’m Latina and have been blessed with many wonderful opportunities.”

A loyal and compassionate volunteer partner for our programs, Nancy “always has the kids’ interests at heart and works to support them to build and achieve their dreams,” says Sandibel Arnold, Hope Solutions’ Volunteer and Donations Coordinator.

On top of her weekly Homework club volunteering, each summer, Nancy brings her passion for art to the kids at Lakeside by creating weeklong art camps – all of which she plans and provides materials for. She believes that all children need and deserve a creative outlet, and she enjoys channeling that creativity through art. Not even a global pandemic could stop Nancy. In 2020, Nancy shifted her program to 100% online and still provided an intimate art camp for the children at Lakeside. Nancy’s activities have included mixed media projects, flower pressing, paper mache bowls, abstract canvas art, and more. In 2022, the camp culminated in a gallery show where the kids proudly exhibited their art.

"In the 10 years I’ve been a volunteer, the children have repaid me tenfold with joy and laughter.
My cup runneth over.”

Nancy is a great example of the impact that education can have in helping people thrive;
we are so proud to have her as a volunteer.

If you are looking for a way to make a difference in our community, consider sharing your passion with the kids in our programs. We are planning our summer camps now and would love you to join the fun.  Don’t have a specific passion to share – we always need helping hands to support our camps. In addition, we have an urgent need for more compassionate volunteers in our after-school program. Interested?  Reach out to Sandibel Arnold.
