Matthew’s Story

Matthew, Hope Solutions client

Matthew wrote to Hope Solutions to share his positive experience with the organization and the remarkable personal growth he’s experienced throughout his journey. Coming from a background that included gang involvement and substance abuse, he knew the path he was on could have easily cost him his life. Instead, thanks to the support of Hope Solutions and his case manager, Shannon, he now has stability, purpose, and hope for his future.

Before coming to Hope Solutions, Matthew was still struggling with substance use and living on the streets. Determined to improve his life, he attended rehab, participated in anger management courses, and engaged in job training programs. Despite these important steps, he still hadn’t found the stability or support system he truly needed.

“Everything began to change when I walked through the doors of Hope Solutions.”

After being released from state penitentiary and determined to better his circumstances, he entered a halfway house and was soon connected with Shannon, a Hope Solutions case manager. From the very beginning, she made sure he had access to the tools and resources necessary to rebuild his life, including assistance with food, help paying rent, transportation to and from work, and guidance as he transitioned from temporary housing into a more stable living situation.

“Shannon consistently went above and beyond her role, not only helping me meet my basic needs but also encouraging me to stay focused and motivated.”

Building on this newfound stability, Matthew took a major step toward his future: enrolling in a Bachelor’s degree program in Psychology at South University of Georgia. He was proud to be granted a scholarship and was also able to secure two educational grants through the state of California to support his schooling.
Today, Matthew is proud to be living in his own apartment. He shares, “I have created a safe, stable, and drug-free environment for myself. I now have a place I can truly call home, which I share with my two pets, who bring me comfort and joy. I am deeply grateful for the opportunity I was given and remain committed to continuing my growth.”
