At Hope Solutions, we know that meeting a family’s basic needs is often the first step toward creating stability. Thanks to the generosity and dedication of the students behind Acalanes High School Families4Families chapter, the families we serve are receiving more than just food, they are receiving a reminder that their community cares.
Families4Families is a national, student-led organization dedicated to addressing food insecurity while inspiring young students to become lifelong volunteers and community leaders. What began during the COVID19 pandemic as a one family hosting food drives in their driveway has grown into a network of more than 160 clubs nationwide, providing approximately 1.7 million meals to families across the country.
Inspired by that mission, friends Andrew, Oliver, Jon, and Justice founded the Acalanes Families4Families chapter during their sophomore year. They wanted to create a meaningful and sustainable way to give back to their community.
“Food is a basic need,” Andrew shared. “Without food, it is difficult for families to connect, be healthy, focus on school and work, and feel good. We wanted to address that concern through our organization.”
While providing food is at the heart of Families4Families, the organization also seeks to inspire young people to embrace service early in life. As Oliver explained, “The overarching mission is to expose kids to philanthropy at a young age. Kids who begin volunteering early are more likely to become active community member throughout their lives.”
When the students were looking for a local nonprofit partner, Hope Solutions stood out because of its deep connection to the community and its commitment to helping individuals and families build brighter futures.
“We liked what Hope Solutions is working to do – ending homelessness,” Oliver said. “The idea that our small club could be impacting homelessness in Contra Costa County is so honorable.”
Throughout the school year, the Acalanes chapter organizes food drives by partnering with athletic teams on campus. Student athletes collect donated food, write encouraging cards, and come together for volunteer events that build teamwork while giving back. Each drive strengthens not only the community, but also the student’s shared commitment to serving others.
“We hope our support gives families comfort, relief, and nourishment to feel and do their best. Worrying about how to feed children and family is a stress at no one should bear.” -Andrew, Familes4Familes Volunteer
As the Acalanes Families4Familes chapter continues to grow, the students hope to expand their impact by bringing Families4Familes to additional schools and inspiring students to carry the mission forward after they graduate. Their vision reflects the power of investing not only in today’s families but also in tomorrow’s leaders.
We are incredibly grateful for our partnership with Familes4Families and for the compassion these students demonstrate through every food drive they organize. Their generosity reminds the families we serve that they are seen, supported, and surrounded by a community that believes in them.
As Oliver shared, “Every time we host a food drive and deliver food, those families know there are high school kids in their community that are thinking about them, who care about them, and are hoping for the best for them.”
That spirit of compassion and community is what makes partnerships like this meaningful. We are grateful to the students of Families4Families for reminding our clients, and us, that hope grows when a community comes together.
